"Agreeing Together in Prayer
I've heard people say, 'I just wish God would do something,' or 'How come nothing ever seems to happen around here?' and 'What does it take God to move?'. The Scriptures give us two specific quidelines in prayer. One is, 'If two of you shall agree... it shall be done for them of my Father.' And the other is, 'Where two or three are gathered in My name, there am I in the midst.'
Both of these Scriptures give us an insight into the purpose and power of the believer's agreement in prayer. The word 'agree' means to be of one mind. It is used in reference to both a symphony or a business, and its objective is to produce, through oneness of mind, a desired goal. In a symphony, you have all kinds of instruments, but they all play the same song. If the music is a piece by Bach, you won't hear the tuba man playing, 'When the Saints Go Marching In.' Every musician may be playing a different instrument, but they're all concentrating on playing the same song.
This act of agreement in prayer brings about the fulfillment of God's plans on earth. We all know it takes two people to bring about the birth of a child. In the same way, in a spiritual dimension, the Lord lets us see the value of partnership in prayer with one another that brings about the birthing of God's righteousness on earth. Agreeing together in prayer has always been the instrument that God has used to fulfill His purpose. Answered prayer involves the responsibility of believers to call on God, and the promise that God will answer.
According to Ephesians 1:20-22, the rulership of Jesus has been settled and established in the heavenlies, but needs to be established and realized on earth. That comes about by our availibility and commitment to pray. I Corinthians 3:9 suggests 'we are laborers together with God.' There are very few things God has done on His own. He's always looking for people like you and me to partner with Him. It's summed up in the words of this verse: 'For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him Amen, unto the glory of God by us,' II Corinthians 1:20. We become the vehicle through which His will and purpose can be released.
There's never been a more urgent time for prayer to be offered. I'm asking the Lord to give us a clear focus in the practice of prayer, but also a clearer understanding of what the scripture calls 'different kinds of prayer.' God has made provision for so many kinds of prayer because we face so many different circumstances. Let's learn together.
Praying always,
