"WHAT CHILD IS THIS?
The birth of Christ was not just your ordinary, everyday, just-another-baby-is-born birth. I mean, you'd expect the birth of God's Son to be different and unusual, wouldn't you? It wouldn't surprise me if it was attended by people, angels, animals, and even God Himself. Everybody would come. And they did. 'And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace good will toward men."' (Luke 2:13-14).
The birth of Christ was certainly miraculous (Luke 1:26,27). You wouldn't expect it to be an ordinary, normal birth would you? Think of it... virgin birth. Jesus Christ, the miracle Son of God. To arrange for the birth of His Son, God had to virtually turn the world upside down. He was working behind the scenes to make everything just right. I remember when Joyce turned our house upside-down to make room for the births of our sons. I mean, those boys changed our lives forever! It's little wonder that when God's Son came to earth, He came to do the same thing... to change forever the hearts and lives of all those who put their faith and trust in Him.
I also think the birth of Christ was amazing. some say He was just another man, prophet, or king. But He was more than a man. He was the Son of God. He was a child like every other child, yet a child like no other child. David Shibley writes: 'What Child is this? He's the poet's greatest theme; the composer's sweetest music; the sinner's dearest friend. He's the healer of broken hearts; the mender of broken relationships; the restorer of broken dreams. To the weary, He is Wonderful. To the confused, He is Counselor. To the weak, He is Mighty God. To the orphaned, He is Everlasting Father. To the war-torn, He is Prince of Peace. In His life, He is humanity's only perfection. In His death, humanity's only Savior. In His resurrection, humanity's only Hope. What Child is this? He is Jesus, God's love-gift to you.' 'For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a savior which is Christ the Lord' (Luke 2:11).
So, you say, what Child is this? I'll tell you... in that tiny manger, it was God who rested there. It was in that manger the holy, sinless Son of God lay. That tiny child, Jesus, came to forgive sins, heal the sick, raise the dead, and save the lost. What Child is this? I'll tell you... He's God's Gift to you, specially wrapped with your name on it.
Thankfull to be His child,
